A. Annual In-House Review 2011 & 2012
B. Education Department Research Thrust and Priorities Consultative Forum (26 September, 2011)
Research is one of the four mandates of Higher Education institutions, which also includes instruction, extension, and production. It is a very important aspect in the development of the other three, since its outputs usually serve to upgrade, support and reinforce the fields of instruction, extension and production. Thus, it can accurately be inferred that research makes these three up to date, progressive and, most important, relevant to their end users.
As one of the areas evaluated during the Education Department’s Level II Accreditation, it is imperative that the researches of the department must coincide with the needs and interests of the community and other institutions such as the Department of Education and the Local Government Units of Sorsogon Province and Sorsogon City. In this way, the outputs of future researches by the College and the education department will truly be relevant and useful to these stakeholders.
The objectives were: to consult with the LGU and pertinent agencies/institutions in order to identify specific topics and issues of interest congruent to the SSC and education department’s research considerations; to formulate updated research thrusts and priorities for the education department with the collaboration of the LGUs and related agencies/institutions; and to create specific plans which would serve as guidance to interested researchers in the education department in the formation and conduct of future studies and researches relevant to the identified thrusts and priorities.
The activity commenced with the discussion of the current research thrusts and priorities of the College. Then, the need for an update of the education department’s research concerns will be raised. Afterwards, each agency and LGU representative will present his/her agency/institution’s current focus of interest. After each presentation, an open forum will follow in order to clarify the matters raised and to formulate specific plans and guidelines which will be applied in the conduct of researches in the department.
The expected output is updated and relevant research thrusts and priorities of the education department, congruent to the needs and interests of the community and other institutional and agency stakeholders.
C. Teacher Education Department Research and Extension Project Preparation Seminar (4 October 2012)
Research and Extension are two of the four mandates of the SSC and all other Higher Education institutions – the others are instruction and production. Research is a very important aspect in the development of the others, since its outputs usually serve to upgrade, support and reinforce the fields of instruction, extension and production. Extension, on the other hand, brings to the community and the institution’s stakeholders the fruits of its research and other efforts. Thus, it can be said that research and extension not only complement each other but also make the other mandates up to date, progressive and, most important, relevant to their end users.
However, to be evaluated and approved by the College screening committee for funding and publication, it is imperative that the research and extension proposals of the Department must be feasible and of high quality. To achieve this end, its faculty researchers and extensionists must be adequately trained in the proper project proposal preparation and packaging. In this way, the future research and extension projects of the Teacher Education Department will truly be relevant and useful to the College and its stakeholders.
The objectives were: the enhancement and upgrade of the research and extension capabilities of SSC Teacher Education Department faculty researchers and extensionists; and the production by the Department of high-quality and viable research and extension projects for funding and publication by the College or external agencies.
The activity was divided into two parts: a lecture phase during the actual activity and a follow-up workshop and presentation phase on a date which will later be determined by the Department.
The 1st part commenced with the discussion of the following topics by the resource speakers:
4, October 2012 (Thursday)
1. Overview of Research (Prof. Ida Francia H. Revale)
2. Guide to Research Proposal Preparation (Prof. Ida Francia H. Revale)
3. Making Theoretical and Conceptual Framework (Dr. Arnulfo M. Mascariñas)
4. Sampling Techniques and Procedures (Mr. Erwin E. Torres)
5. Measurement and Instrumentation (Dr. Rebecca Rosario O. Bercasio)
6. Research Design (Dr. Arnulfo M. Mascariñas)
7. Data Analysis (Dr. Luis O. Amano)
These R & D experts were requested from the Bicol University Research and Development Center (formerly of CHED-BU ZRC) through their director, Dr. Arnulfo M. Mascariñas.
To evaluate knowledge/input gained by the participants on the 1st phase (lecture), the activity will be concluded with a workshop and presentation of draft proposals at a later date after the seminar. During this phase, the BU RDC staff who conducted the lecture (or SSC Research and Extension staff) will evaluate and critique the outputs presented by the participants.
The expected output of this activity is expected to enhance and update the research and extension capabilities of the SSC Teacher Education Department faculty researchers and extensionists. This may also result to the generation by the department of more high-quality and feasible research and extension projects for possible funding and publication by the College.
